9-Day Morocco Desert Trip from Marrakech to Merzouga

Discover southern Morocco on a private nine-day journey from Marrakech through the High Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, the Draa Valley, and the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga.

The itinerary combines guided sightseeing in Marrakech, historic kasbahs, dramatic valleys, an optional or guided walk in the Dades region, two nights near the Sahara dunes, and a desert-camp experience. The slower route provides more time in southern Morocco than a standard three-day desert circuit.

Private transportation, accommodation, guiding, meals, desert activities, and the travel pace can be adapted to your dates, interests, preferred accommodation category, and budget.

9-Day Morocco Desert Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech

Welcome to Morocco. Upon arrival at Marrakech Menara Airport, meet your private driver and transfer to your riad or hotel.

The first day is kept flexible according to your arrival time. After checking in, you may take a relaxed walk through the medina, visit Jemaa el-Fna, browse the surrounding souks, or simply rest after your flight.

In the evening, enjoy dinner independently or arrange a traditional Moroccan dining experience.

Overnight: Marrakech

Day 2: Private Guided Trip of Marrakech

After breakfast, meet your licensed local guide for a private exploration of Marrakech.

Discover selected landmarks and neighborhoods such as Bahia Palace, the Koutoubia area, traditional souks, artisan workshops, historic streets, and Jemaa el-Fna.

Depending on your interests and confirmed entrance times, the day may also include Majorelle Garden or another selected attraction.

Your guide can adapt the visit around Moroccan history, architecture, food, crafts, photography, or local culture.

Enjoy the evening at leisure.

Overnight: Marrakech

Day 3: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

After breakfast, leave Marrakech and travel across the High Atlas Mountains.

Make selected panoramic stops along the mountain route before continuing toward Ait Ben Haddou.

Explore the historic fortified village on foot and discover its traditional earthen architecture before continuing toward Ouarzazate.

Depending on timing and your interests, stop briefly in Ouarzazate before continuing through southern Moroccan landscapes toward the Dades Valley.

Travel through areas around Skoura and Kelaat M’Gouna before reaching Boumalne Dades.

Arrive at your hotel or guesthouse in the late afternoon and enjoy dinner at your accommodation when included.

Overnight: Dades Valley

Day 4: Dades Valley Hike and Local Experience

Today is dedicated to exploring the Dades region at a slower pace.

After breakfast, meet your local guide for a walk through selected parts of the valley. Depending on your preferred activity level, the route may include village paths, cultivated fields, distinctive rock formations, traditional settlements, and panoramic viewpoints.

A lunch with a local Amazigh host family can be arranged when specifically included in the confirmed itinerary.

The afternoon can remain flexible for additional walking, photography, relaxing at your accommodation, or visiting nearby villages.

This day provides an important break between the longer road journeys and allows more time to experience southern Morocco rather than simply driving through it.

Overnight: Dades Valley

Day 5: Dades Valley – Tinghir – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and travel toward Tinghir and Todra Gorge.

Take time for a walk through the gorge and surrounding palm-filled valley before continuing east toward the Sahara.

After lunch, travel through changing desert landscapes toward Erfoud and Rissani.

Continue to Merzouga, located beside the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Arrive in the late afternoon and check into your hotel or desert lodge near the dunes.

Depending on timing, enjoy sunset views over Erg Chebbi before dinner.

Overnight: Merzouga

Day 6: Merzouga Desert Exploration – Khamlia – Camel Ride – Sahara Camp

Today is dedicated entirely to the Merzouga region.

After breakfast, begin a private 4×4 excursion around Erg Chebbi. Depending on the final itinerary and local conditions, the excursion may include desert viewpoints, small settlements, seasonal nomadic communities, fossil areas, and Khamlia, where you can experience local musical traditions.

Return to your accommodation or stop for lunch in the region before enjoying some free time.

Later in the afternoon, prepare for your Sahara camp experience.

Travel into the dunes by camel or private 4×4, depending on your preference. Stop to watch the sunset before continuing to your camp.

Enjoy dinner followed by an evening beneath the desert sky.

Overnight: Sahara Desert camp near Merzouga

Day 7: Merzouga – Rissani – Alnif – Nkob – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate

Wake early for an optional sunrise over the dunes before breakfast.

Leave the Merzouga region and begin the journey west toward Ouarzazate.

Travel through Rissani and continue through the landscapes around Alnif and Nkob before reaching the Draa Valley.

Stop at selected viewpoints along the valley, where palm groves, traditional villages, and dry mountain landscapes create some of southern Morocco’s most distinctive scenery.

Continue through Agdz toward Ouarzazate.

Because this is one of the longest transfer days of the trip, sightseeing stops should be carefully selected rather than trying to include too many activities.

Arrive in Ouarzazate in the late afternoon or early evening and check into your hotel.

Depending on arrival time, visit Kasbah Taourirt or another selected attraction, or leave those visits for the following morning.

Overnight: Ouarzazate

Day 8: Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – High Atlas – Marrakech

After breakfast, enjoy time in Ouarzazate according to your interests.

A film-studio visit may be included when specifically requested and confirmed in advance.

Continue toward Ait Ben Haddou if you did not explore it fully on Day 3, or use this stop for a shorter revisit and photography.

The Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage property and a notable example of traditional southern Moroccan earthen architecture.

After lunch, cross the High Atlas Mountains toward Marrakech.

Arrive in the late afternoon or evening and check into your riad or hotel.

Enjoy your final evening in Marrakech at leisure.

Overnight: Marrakech

Day 9: Marrakech Departure

Enjoy breakfast at your accommodation and free time according to your flight schedule.

Your private driver will collect you from your hotel or riad and transfer you to Marrakech Menara Airport.

If your flight departs later in the day, additional time can be arranged for shopping, lunch, a hammam, or another short activity before your airport transfer.

Your 9-Day Morocco Desert Trip concludes after combining Marrakech, the High Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, Merzouga, Erg Chebbi, the Sahara Desert, the Draa Valley, and Ouarzazate.
